Culinary Experience Brings the Idrija Mining House Giser to Life

On Saturday, May 11, the long-awaited pre-premiere of the culinary and theater experience O, sonce moje was held in the mining house Giser. Visitors to the experience enter the house, which is briefly transformed into the scene of the silver wedding of the Črv family in 1922, and taste a 4-course menu created according to original recipes from that time. The experience, based on the original text by Aleš Čar, will have its public premiere this weekend, and soon we will add new dates.

The story takes the experience back in time 100 years ago. Four years after the Great War, visitors visit the Črv family as part of their wedding anniversary. They experience the world of mining Idrija through the desires of young Klara, who is looking for happiness under the sun, albeit in forbidden love. In the story, images of the everyday life of one of the countless families who lived in the Idrija mining houses are interwoven in an interesting way.

A completely original concept

In a unique way, we bring life to the Idrija mining houses, which we have already thoroughly described and studied in recent years. We see the Giser house, which we bought from the old owners, as a location that, due to its authentic image, is perfect for preparing various experiences. Among them is also the culinary and theater experience O, sonce moje, which is also part of the program of the European Capital of Culture GO! 2025.

We got the idea for a very special concept when we found a cookbook in the legacy of the last living owner of the house, Franco Župančič. The cookbook surprises with its variety and age, as it was written in 1922. After successfully applying for the Creative Europe program, we also started developing an experience that would combine a culinary experience with a theater performance.

The concept of the experience was started by Matevž Straus and Drejc Kokošar, and important aspects were also contributed by Tilen Božič (culinary part) and Ana Kržišnik Blažica (dramaturgical part). The developed concept was further refined by the well-known screenwriter and writer Aleš Čar, who wrote the original text. Actors from the Dramatic Society of Idrija and the Small Theater School GJV Idrija perform in the play.

A rich historical background

When preparing for the experience, we delved deeply into the period represented in the experience. We researched the historical background of events after the First World War, which also influenced the development of the game concept itself. In the game, you will also be able to listen to original music prepared by musicians Alen Bogataj, Luka Čibej, Nace Kogej, and Rok Šinkovec based on old musical motifs from that time. In a completely unique way, the famous punk song of the Idrija group Kuzle also gets involved in the game!

Tickets available via the website

Tickets for the experience can be obtained via a special website (only in Slovenian), and you can pay by card or visit our premises in person (Vodnikova 3, Idrija). The price of the ticket, which includes the culinary and theater experience, is €60 per person. The entrance fee includes participation in the event and a four-course lunch/dinner. The experience takes place in a small group of up to 10 participants.

The experience in the Giser house is created within the framework of the RE : project, which is co-financed by the Creative Europe program. As part of the project, we are working with partners from Slovakia and Romania, and in addition to the theater-culinary experience, we are also preparing special master classes in the summer months next year.

The experience is also part of the official GO! 2025 European capital of culture Nova Gorica – Gorizia
