MASTERCLASS: 3-Day Heritage Course in Idrija
In the pleasant June weather, a 3-day free international master class “RE:viving” will be held in Idrija from June 12 to 14.
“Heritage Masterclass: New Approaches to Old Challenges”, where you can gain many new insights and experiences!
We have prepared an interdisciplinary program that offers both enthusiasts and professionals in the UNESCO heritage city a unique opportunity to learn, connect, and network. As part of the course, you will have the chance to attend high-quality lectures, and we particularly highlight the culinary experience of the Idrija mining houses, where you will taste the ambiance of the Giser House from 1921.

The course will focus on three workshop modules., from which you can choose according to your choice. Do you want to learn what traditional construction is like and try it yourself? Or bring heritage closer to young people with the help of digitization? Maybe you are thinking about how to make heritage more accessible to the broader public through storytelling and narrative? You can choose between 3 different courses led by experienced and recognized mentors:
- Traditional construction with lime plaster under the direction of Klavdi Zalar
Under the watchful eye of master restorer Klavdi Zalar, you will learn about the multifaceted nature of lime plasters, both literally and figuratively. At the The course will take place from June 12 to 14, 2024., you will restore a part of the wall surface together and explore different techniques of applying lime plaster in practice. The workshop is intended for all profiles.
Klavdij Zalar is an academic restorer, researcher, and lime plaster master. He deals with the restoration of works of art of all kinds and objects and objects of cultural heritage. Among other things, he participated in the renovation and research of Kastra in Ajdovščina and the Servite monastery in Koper.
- Contemporary storytelling, interpretation, and promotion of heritage led by Ajda Bračič and Maša Ogrin
By designing texts, photographs, graphics, and videos, together with Ajda Bračič and Maša Ogrin, you will spin a strong story-telling thread, which is the key to a modern approach to the interpretation and promotion of cultural heritage. The workshop is intended for all profiles.
Ajda Bračič is a publicist, writer, and architect, the founder of Kajža, a meeting point for renovation and sustainable living, and in 2022 she published her literary debut, Leteči žodni.
Maša Ogrin is a self-employed architect and researcher at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ljubljana. She is the author of several recognized social initiatives and architectural projects.
- Arctur-led 3D capture for heritage documentation
You will learn more about 3D digital capture, which enables more detailed documentation of heritage and brings heritage closer to young people (e.g. as part of workshops at schools) in an interactive and modern way. The workshop is suitable for anyone who is interested in the field of digitization, but it is especially recommended for heritage experts who carry out documentary and pedagogical activities, as well as amateur researchers and students.
Arctur is a high-tech company with more than 30 years of history from Nova Gorica and its own supercomputer center. As part of the Heritage+ program, Arctur’s experts deal with 3D digitization (photogrammetry and laser scanning) and digital interpretation of cultural heritage (AR/VR, holograms, applications, and interactive screens. Arctur participates in international projects, and its tourism products have been awarded several times internationally

Get to know the unique locations of the UNESCO destination – Idrija
The course will take place in the city and buildings included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which will give the master class even more special meaning.
The Inzaghi engine room is the former engine room of the Inzaghi Shaft, which is an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2019, it became the workspace of the ID20 Institute and offers a suitable space for heritage innovations.
The Giser house is a typical example of an Idrija mining house, which represents an endangered typology of residential houses that developed in this oldest former mining town in Slovenia at the end of the 18th century.
The Idrija Youth Center – a former monastery – is home to many Idrija youth organizations, including the Idrija Youth Hostel.
